Some thoughts

About the piece

I was deeply touched by the BBC's Reith Lecture of 2014 by Dr Atul Gwande. It seemed like an exciting proposition to take that as the inspiration for the installation for the Baring Foundation and Bluecoat commission.  As is my usual practice I took the thought for a wider consultation. I talked, listened, emailed and read comments and reviews. The idea I was getting back again and again was the value of

A Meaningful Life

If age affects physical suppleness ,safety becomes a major concern. In extreme cases preoccupation with safety and comfort can reduce choices to the extent that one could get so diminishes that "who you are becomes disconnected from who you were of who you want to be." In his book "Being Mortal "Dr Gwande talks about "Not to confine people's choices, in the name of safety but to expand them in the name of living a worthwhile life " (141)

I found a resonance of the concept of not giving up or continuing the search for the meaning as it constantly changes ,in a poem by Rabindranath Tagore ,where he urges  .... do not yet fold your wings ...

With  these inspirations I   worked with choreographer Marc Brew to find an 'age appropriate'  movement vocabulary and collaborating with Ansuman Biswas to create an installation that will seamlessly connect the movement with the sentiment.
